Anthony Gerard Porraro passed away on May 23rd, 2025.
He lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Anthony spent his formative years in Haledon, NJ, before settling in Mahwah, where he resided for the past 59 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vincent and Pasqualina (née Nazzaro) Porraro, and his siblings, Vincent, Sabino, and Angela.
Anthony was an avid reader and a dedicated gardener who found joy in growing vegetables for his family sauce. He was also a seasoned traveler with a remarkable ability to connect with people—he truly never met a stranger. He found simple joys in feeding and watching birds, and his love for opera and Broadway musicals was only surpassed by his enthusiasm for a friendly game of poker or bocce ball. A devoted sports enthusiast, he loved coaching all sports and particularly enjoyed horse racing, the NY Giants, and the NY Rangers. Above all, he cherished his grandchildren and took immense pride in their accomplishments.
His early life included attending the New York Military Academy, followed by service in the Army during the Korean War, where he was deployed to Germany. After the war, he attended New York University and William Paterson College.
A memorial service celebrating Anthony’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 11th, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff, New Jersey.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Dana Porraro (née Emire), and his children:
Matthew Porraro and his wife Frances Porraro (née Caulfield) and their children Mia and Antonio
Greg Porraro and his wife Michal Sparks and his children Shea and Quinn, her children Bergen and Ivy
Tracey Hayden (née Porraro) and her husband Michael Hayden and their son Zachary
Peter Porraro and his wife Michelle Porraro (née Verhoeven) and their children Isabella and Marcus
