Catherine D. Castiglia

Catherine D. Castiglia (Bodkin), a resident of Allendale, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 15, 2023.  For 30 years Catherine was the beloved wife of the late Peter C. Castiglia, M.D. of Clifton who passed away in 2008.  She is predeceased by her loving parents, Anna J. (McMullen) and William N. Bodkin of Philadelphia, PA and her dear sister Nancy (Anna) and brother-in-law William Tereniak of Annapolis, MD.  She is survived by her loving children Kathleen Sutphin and partner Gary Gentry, Martha A. Sutphin and husband Ralph LaRossa, Michael J. Sutphin and wife Jocelyn. Catherine will also be dearly missed by her cherished grandchildren Erin, Steven, William, and Kathryn Rose and her adored nieces and nephew, as well as friends and caretakers who she considered family.  Catherine is also survived by her step children Linda Danford and husband Steve, V. James Castiglia, Margaret Laurilliard and husband James and Peter Castiglia and wife Julia and their children and grandchildren.

Proud of her Irish heritage, Catherine relished speaking of her childhood and formative years in Manoa, PA and her summers “down the shore” at her family’s home in Avalon, NJ.  After graduating from Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA in 1951 she went on to study at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital Nursing School in Darby, PA where she graduated in 1954 with a degree in nursing and became a Registered Nurse.   Catherine moved to Annapolis, MD where she worked as a nurse at Anna Arundel Memorial Hospital and started her family with her first husband the late Martin D. Sutphin.  In 1962 she settled in Rutherford, NJ where she raised her family for close to 20 years.  She enjoyed being a Brownie leader, Little League mom and hosting neighborhood parties while working as an emergency room nurse at Passaic General Hospital. Catherine was known as an excellent cook, seamstress and “handyman” and took pride in sharing these gifts with her family.  Throughout their life together, Catherine and her husband Dr. Castiglia enjoyed traveling to Europe, Mexico and around the United States. 

 Nicknamed by her beloved grandchildren, Namie and Namus, she was famous for her impish grin, puckered kisses and loveable wave that always brought on a shared smile and laugh.  Catherine led a life filled with people who loved her and will be dearly missed.

Catherine was a supporter of Allendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps and other Allendale first responder organizations. The family respectfully requests no flowers.  Please consider supporting one of her favorite local organizations or a community charity of your choosing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on March 20, 2023 at Church of the Guardian Angel 320 Franklin Tpke., Allendale, NJ 07401.  A private burial will follow.
