Douglas Clark MacCallum, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on March 28, 2025 at age 92, at his home in Franklin Lakes. In his final days, we were blessed to be by his side and share with him how grateful we are for the love he shared with us all and to reaffirm our love for him.
Born on July 9, 1932, the only child of Douglas and Claire MacCallum, and the only grandson of Claire and Truman Mersereau, he grew up surrounded by loving adults, in Purchase and later White Plains, New York.
Douglas attended Brown University, where he fell in love with Betty during the first week of her freshman year. Upon graduation from Brown/ROTC he was commissioned Ensign and served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Initially at Glenview, Illinois, he was later stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and sailed to the Caribbean and other areas on multiple deployments. Lieutenant MacCallum served in the US Navy Reserve until 1956. Dad was proud of his service, and reflected on that time as some of the best experiences of his life.
He and his beloved wife Betty enjoyed raising their three daughters in homes in Ossining, Springvale and Poughkeepsie, NY, Potomac, Maryland, Lake Forest, Illinois, and of course Wyckoff. Dad worked for IBM for 35 years, and thrived in his many assignments. Doug and Betty enjoyed the opportunity to live near Washington D.C., Chicago, and New York City. Mr. MacCallum was Director of Industry Relations in IBM’s Madison Avenue headquarters for his final decade at IBM. He later spent 5 years, at United Computer Corp as Senior Vice President, and Managing Director, United Software Services.
Wherever they lived they always managed to spend time at Cape Cod in the summer. As the family grew these gatherings expanded to include their daughter’s spouses and grandchildren. Swimming, sailing with their college buddies, golf, and lobster dinners were the simple pleasures that he cherished.
Douglas is predeceased by his adored wife Betty and survived by his three daughters, and son-in-laws, Jane and Benard Preziosi Jr., Lisa and Kevin Miller, Martha and Dan Gregory, eight grandchildren and their spouses Leanne and Andrew Rotondi, Kate and David Golkin, Jonathan and Amanda Miller, Benard and Jenna Preziosi lll, William and Shirin Preziosi, Elizabeth Gregory, Reed Gregory, and Harry Gregory, and four Great Grandchildren, Harrison Rotondi, Benard Preziosi lV, Cleo Golkin, and Lucy Rotondi.
The MacCallum family will receive friends on Monday, 4 until 7 pm at the Vander Plaat funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff NJ 07481. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, 10am at St. Elizabeth’s RC Church, 700 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ, 07481. Internment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
