Father John "Jack" Reynolds O'Connell, born on May 27, 1947 in Astoria, Queens, NY to John and Florence O'Connell, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, leaving a legacy of faith, service, and love. He is survived by his sister, Claire, her husband Mark, their children Ryan (Alexandra), Daniel (Jenna), and Caitlyn, as well as his three great nephews, Connor, Liam, Rhys, and great niece, Crosley. He was predeceased by his stepmother, Joanne O'Connell.
Jack attended St. Joseph's Grammar School, Bergen Catholic High School, Seton Hall University, Immaculate Conception Seminary, the University of Notre Dame, and Columbia University. He earned multiple master's degrees in theology, psychology, and biomedical ethics, which shaped his approach to ministry and life.
Father Jack's priesthood was marked by his devotion to his parishioners and commitment to the communities he served. He was the pastor of Church of the Nativity in Midland Park and St. Andrew's in Westwood, NJ, and continued to serve the wonderful people at St. Elizabeth's during his retirement.
Anyone who knew him understood his love for all things football, especially Notre Dame. In the fall, he could often be found on the sidelines of a Bergen Catholic football game, rooting on the Crusaders to another State Championship. Jack also enjoyed a round of golf and spending time on the course with friends and family.
In addition to his work in ministry, he enjoyed spending time at the beach and cherished the friendships he built with family and friends, who became like family to him. His legacy of love, laughter, and faith will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
