Fay Sfugaras, 97, of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Greece, Fay immigrated to the United States at just six months old. As the eldest of her siblings, she helped pave the way for her family in their new country. She made her home in Englewood Cliffs for many years before later moving to Franklin Lakes.
A talented graphic artist, Fay enjoyed a career at Prentice Hall in Englewood Cliffs, where she designed book covers and layouts, work she truly loved. After retiring in 1977, she continued working with her son, Steven.
Fay was a devout member of St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church in Tenafly, where she was an active member of the church’s Philoptochos Society, an organization devoted to philanthropy and service.
Fay found joy in painting, crafts, and preparing traditional Greek cuisine, especially baking cookies and pastries for her family. Gathering in the kitchen and around the table was one of the most meaningful ways she shared her love.
Above all, Fay’s life was centered on her family. Family was everything to her, and her greatest happiness was found in their love, companionship, and support.
She was the beloved wife of the late John Sfugaras; cherished mother of Steven Sfugaras and his wife, Pamela, and Zabetti Dowling and her husband, Michael; loving grandmother of John Michael Dowling and his wife, Catherine, Faye Giacomaro and her husband, Thomas, and John Steven Sfugaras and his wife, Jennifer; dear great-grandmother of Madaline and Lilia Dowling, Wyatt and Zoe Giacomaro, and Dimitri Sfugaras; and sister of Virginia Laoudis, Anna Pappas, and Irene Papas.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 467 Grandview Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Englewood, New Jersey.
