George Hoogenhuis Obituary

George Hoogenhuis, 91, of Mahwah, went to be with his Lord on Friday, November 27, 2020. George was born in Midland Park, and resided there until moving to Mahwah in 1957.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean Conflict.

In his early career George worked with his father as a cabinetmaker. Later he was employed as a Chemical Operator with Hoffmann-La Roche, where he worked for more than 25 years, retiring in 1991.

George was an active lifetime member of the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a Cadet Counselor in his younger years, and later as the coordinator of the Homeless Sheltering Program.  He had a very special connection with the men whom the program served, and he exemplified Christ with his humbleness and kindness.  He also served as Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for many years and used his carpentry skills and talents to contribute to many projects and necessary maintenance at the church.  He and his wife also volunteered with World Renew Disaster Relief and served many times in various locations throughout the U.S.

He was a Member of the Mahwah Volunteer Ambulance Corp Company #4 for many years, and was also active in the Midland Park-Wyckoff VFW Post 7086.

George was a loving and godly husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He loved working in the yard, puttering in his basement workshop and always had many projects on which he was working.  He was fun-loving, gracious, good-hearted and always ready to give of himself for others.

Surviving is his loving wife of 65 years, Clara (Lucas), his devoted children, Susan and her husband Steven Weglarz, George and his wife Janice (Kuipers), Mary and Nancy.  George is also survived by his sister-in-law, Phyllis Schipper, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  He was pre-deceased by his sisters Jeanette Pontier and Marie King.
