George R. Layng Jr., of Ramsey, New Jersey, passed peacefully on September 13th, 2025, surrounded by members of his loving family. George is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Deborah; children, George III (Madelyn), Peter (Heather), Mary (John) Wilson, Susan (Eric) Riedell, & Patrick (Amy). George was adored by his grandchildren; George IV (Maureen), Mary (Erich) Sternkopf, Jacquelyn, Collin, Liam, Susan, Conner, Jack, Patrick Brady, Ryan, Meghan, Catherine, James, & William, as well as by his great grandson, Cillian; in addition to myriad nieces, nephews, and friends. He was born in New York, NY, to George and Ethel Layng.
Before joining the United States Marine Corp in 1957, George attended Columbia University. George joined the Fire Department of New York in 1963, rising to the rank of Battalion Chief before he retired. George loved nights at Carnegie Hall, golf with friends, but most especially travel, having visited many areas within the United States and countries throughout the world. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visiting will be held on Sunday September 21st from 2-6 p.m. at Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s R.C. Church, Ramsey, NJ. Burial will follow at Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Breakthrough T1D (Type 1 Diabetes Foundation) or Tunnel To Towers Foundation.
