Harriet Carlson

June 10, 1930 ~ January 9, 2022 (age 91)


Harriet Emily Carlson (nee Sayre), age 91, of Midland Park, NJ passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 9th, 2022. Harriet was born in Hackensack, NJ on June 10th, 1930. She is survived by her loving, devoted daughter, Annie (Carlson) Lewis and beloved son-in-law, Christopher Lewis, treasured granddaughter, Melanie Lewis and fiancé, Tyler Mansour, her beloved son-in-law’s son Christopher (C.J) Lewis Jr. and his girlfriend, Ashley Biggs, loving niece, Patty Sayre Gray and her family, Bob & Nicky, and her nephew, Walter Sayre, and his wife, Elizabeth, and her son, David Carlson.  She is predeceased by her cherished son-in-law’s daughter, Tarishia Kenyetta (T.K.) Lewis. Harriet was a loving and loyal friend, who will be missed by so many that were considered family. She will be forever remembered affectionately as “Nam.” 

Harriet graduated from Paterson State Teachers’ College in 1952. Harriet devoted her working life to teaching in town she grew up in Paramus, NJ. She spent most of her career teaching third grade at Stony Lane Elementary School, until she retired in 1994. Harriet loved teaching and made lifelong friendships with her colleagues. She travelled extensively with the friends she made teaching.

She was a parishioner of Trinity Episcopal Church of Allendale were served on the Alter Guild. A former parishioner at Church of the Good Shepherd.

Harriet loved to read, watch her “British” shows, and really enjoyed sports. Her favorite team was The Mets, which was a source of angst and joy, as any Mets fan would understand.

Harriet was a lover of pets, especially her dogs, Ralph, and Buddy.

Funeral arrangements are being cared for by Vander Plaat Funeral Home,, 257 Godwin Avenue Wyckoff, NJ.

A Memorial service will be held a later date that will be announced by the family.
