Helen J. Scherreik

Helen J. Scherreik passed away at home in Mahwah, NJ on April 27, 2025, at the age of 101. Helen was born in Pittston, PA on December 20, 1923, to Mary (Glaveckas) and Peter Chaplick.

She married Warren Scherreik in June,1951 at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. They settled in Bloomingdale, NJ where they raised their children Robert, Susan and Mona.

Helen began her 25-year career in real estate as a sales agent and obtained a license as a real estate broker.  In 1976 she founded Scherreik Agency in Riverdale, NJ specializing in the sale of residential and commercial properties.

Helen retired to Mahwah, NJ in 1987.  As an active member of the Franklin Lakes Seniors and Mahwah Senior Center she enjoyed many social activities and outings.

She was a parishioner of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Ramsey, NJ and deeply devoted to her faith.    

Helen is survived by her son, Robert Scherreik of Bloomingdale, NJ; daughter, Susan Scherreik Hynes and son-in-law, Edward of Upper Saddle River, NJ; and daughter, Mona Branigan of Leland, NC.  She was the beloved Nana of grandchildren Elyse Branigan of Reno, NV; Lauren Branigan of Salt Lake City, UT; Clare Hynes of Upper Saddle River, NJ; Daniel Hynes of Hackensack, NJ; and Joseph and Matthew Scherreik both of Philadelphia, PA.

Helen was married 41 years to her husband, Warren until his death in 1992.  She was predeceased by her son, Warren Scherreik, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Michele Madonna Scherreik and son-in-law, Michael Branigan. Helen was the longest living member of her maiden family predeceased by sisters, Mary, Regina, Jule, Mona and Rose and brothers, Anthony, Albert and Joseph.

In this time of grief, remember Helen with joy, celebrating the remarkable woman she was and the impact she had on each of our lives. She will be deeply missed, graciously remembered and forever loved.

Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025, at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff, N.J.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 200 Godwin Avenue, Wycoff, NJ.  Interment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery, 770 Darlington Avenue, Mahwah, NJ.
