Irene B. Fry passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27th, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was born in Brooklyn, NY in November, 1938 to Thomas and Mary Turnbull who emigrated to America from Scotland in the 1920s. In Brooklyn as a twelve year old, she met the love of her life, John Fry. After years of friendship and eventually dating, they married in 1959, spending 63 loving years together. John and Irene moved to Queens where they raised their children and eventually moved to Port Washington, NY. Irene’s children, John and Laurie adored and treasured their beautiful mother. Irene also had a professional career in banking and eventually worked at the Helen Keller National Center before her retirement in 1998. Irene was a devout Catholic, the most generous, kind, loving person who always put her family and friends first. She cared for numerous family members when ill and was always there to listen.
Irene is survived by her husband John, her children John (Cara), Laurie Kane (Tim), grandchildren Mia (Evan Dethier) Nathaniel and Phoebe Fry; Katharine, Jack, and Caroline Kane. She was lovingly known as ‘Grandma Re’ to her grandchildren who cherish her. She is survived by her nephews, Douglas and Thomas Turnbull, James Taney and their beautiful famiies.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Patricia and George Taney, her brother John, her sister-in-law Kay Turnbull, nephews Gary and Glenn Turnbull, niece Patricia Taney and grand-niece Kimberly Turnbull Serso.
A Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 1st at 10:00am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 1 Passaic Street, Ridgewood. Interment is private. There are no visiting hours.
