It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janice Senatore Markovic, who peacefully left this world on November 11, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on July 27, 1948, in New York, NY, Janice was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, teacher, and friend whose light touched the lives of so many.
Janice was a woman of boundless compassion, generosity, and wit. Known for her warm smile and open heart, she was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear. Her kindness was matched only by her incredible strength, sharp mind, and resilience—qualities she embodied throughout her life.
The cornerstone of Janice’s life was her love for her husband, James “Jim” Charles Markovic. Married for 53 years, their bond was one of deep affection, devotion, and endless laughter. Jim’s quick sense of humor never failed to brighten Janice’s day, while his keen intellect added so much to their conversations. Inseparable companions, they shared a lifetime of adventures, quiet evenings at home, and countless cherished moments simply being together.
Janice found her calling in elementary education, where her dedication and hard work touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. Yet, it was her role within her family that truly defined her. She was a cherished mother to Sara (and her husband, Steve) and Teddy (and his partner, Cara), and a beloved grandmother to Brooke, Benjamin, and Gordon. She was also a caring step-grandmother to Cara's children, Carolina and Sebastian. Additionally, she was a loving sister to Claudia and Rey (and his wife, Michelle), and a devoted aunt to Claudia’s daughter Anna and Rey’s sons Chase and Ryan.
Family was Janice’s greatest joy, and she nurtured her loved ones with boundless love and unwavering support throughout her life. She was the glue that held their entire family—both immediate and extended—together. With her gift for creating connections, whether through family gatherings, holiday traditions, or simply reaching out to remind everyone they were loved, she turned her home into a haven of warmth and belonging. For her entire life, Janice was the heart of her family, ensuring that bonds remained strong and that no one ever felt alone.
Her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched, the wisdom she imparted, and the beautiful memories she created. Janice is also survived by her extended family members Sandy, Jimmy, Jacob, Anna, Rosa, Gigi, and Naomi, who will forever cherish her memory. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit and love will remain with us always.
Beyond her professional and family life, Janice was passionate about travel, reading, and hosting guests. Whether it was playing spirited games of Rummikub, planning her next adventure, entertaining friends, or simply being surrounded by family, she approached everything she did with enthusiasm and grace, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know her.
The family will receive friends on January 18, 2025, 2:00 to 4:00 PM followed by a memorial service to honor her life at 4:00 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, N.J.
In accordance with Janice’s wishes, she will be laid to rest privately at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that tribute donations be made in Janice’s name to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
May Janice rest in peace, embraced by the love she gave so freely.
