Jean Horner Obituary

Jean Horner, 95, of Ramsey, N.J. (previously Paramus, N.J.) passed away peacefully January 3,2025. Predeceased (1981) by her husband, Sylvester Horner, survived by her children Jackie Horner, John Horner (Pam), Carol Beener (Gene), Cathy Kittredge (Brian), Barbara McFadden, stepmother to Douglas Horner (Darby), 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Born in Jersey City, she was raised by her grandmother and aunt, predeceased by her brother, Frank (Betty) and cousin Albert (Martha). After graduating Snyder Highschool, Jean attended Berkeley College. Finding work in NYC at GAF, Jean was introduced through a blind date to her husband of 27 years, Jack Horner.

They briefly relocated to Illinois where they established life long friends and enjoyed the simplicity of a midwestern lifestyle. However, their New Jersey roots ran deep. They would travel east for summer vacation to Long Beach Island where they created cherished memories by the ocean with their children. With the purchase of a home in Beach Haven, this tradition has carried through the generations and has continued to be shared and enjoyed by all.

Jean and Jack travelled extensively. Their travels forged new friendships around the world and sparked a passion for new cuisines that they shared with (and experimented on) their children.

Above all, Jean was a devoted mother and homemaker, finding immense joy in nurturing her family. She raised her children so that no one felt special but everyone felt special because “everyone was her favorite”. Though she was formerly Jean Jones, and formally Mrs. Horner, she was also affectionately known by a variety of names – Mom, Momma, Jean, Jeano, Grandy, Gigi and Grandazzle.

As her family grew, Jean flourished in her new role as “Grandy”. A constant and supportive presence, Jean lived and loved with an open mind and open heart. She never judged or offered unsolicited advice. All that really, truly, mattered to her was the happiness of her children and grandchildren.

In honor of Jean, we invite you to celebrate her remarkable life on Wednesday, January 8th . Whether you join us in person or from afar, we ask that you wear a splash of pink—Jean’s favorite color— to honor the love and joy she brought to everyone she touched.
