John J. Unger, 64, a lifelong resident of Waldwick, peacefully entered eternal rest on June 8, 2021. He was born April 14, 1957 to John R. and Mary T. (nee Bergin). He is predeceased by his parents. His greatest joys in life were his three children Brianna, Jonathan, and Savannah. He was a loving brother to Margaret J. of Waldwick and Thomas T. of Vineland. John served as a bodyguard for former President Richard Nixon and played an active role in the community by volunteering with the Waldwick Fire Department and Ambulance Corps. He worked for 26 years as a Waldwick Police Officer, as well as with the Bergen County Arson Squad. John enjoyed golfing and indulging in a good book. He loved traveling to both new and familiar places, such as Wildwood, NJ every year for the fireman's convention and going on cruises. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his kind-heartedness and the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-7 PM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff. A prayer will begin on Friday at 10:15 AM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, Mass will follow at 11 AM at St. Luke’s Church, 340 Franklin Turnpike, Ho Ho Kus.
