Joseph Buis

Joseph “Joe” Buis, 85, passed to his Heavenly rest on January 13, 2026 in Lewes, DE. Born in Paterson, NJ, Joe was raised in Wyckoff, NJ and graduated from Bergen County Technical School. He worked as a mechanic with his father at Cedar Hill Service Station and took over the automotive business when his father retired. He served in the U.S. Army in from 1961 to 1962, married Betty in 1964 and raised his family in Wyckoff. In 2010, he relocated to Millsboro, DE.

Joe was actively involved in his community. He was a firefighter with Wyckoff Company 3 for 35 years and was a life member of Sicomac Community Engine Co 3. He also volunteered with the Wyckoff Ambulance Corps for 50 years, including serving as Captain in 1975 and 2000. He served as Treasurer at Wyckoff Baptist Church where he was also a member and also attended Calvary Baptist Church after moving to Delaware. He was an avid car enthusiast, fisherman and boater.

He is survived by his children Cyndi and John, his sister Marilyn (Jerry), his grandchildren Abbie and Adam, and 5 nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Joe and Trina, and mother of his children, Betty.

Visiting hours are 5:00 to 8:00pm on Thursday, January 22 at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ. Graveside service is 12:00pm, Friday, January 23 at the Laurel Grove Memorial Park, 295 Totowa Road, Totowa, NJ 07512.
