Obituary

Joseph “Harry” Nerahoo, a dedicated father, loving grandfather, great-grandfather and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of September 8, 2023. He was born on January 6, 1939, in Trinidad & Tobago.
Joseph was a man of unwavering determination and a strong work ethic. He bravely raised four daughters single-handedly and took immense pride in the family he built. His daughters, Nargis (husband Scott Rifflard), Margaret (husband Jason DeLaro), Sarah (husband Anthony Goodman), Alyssa (husband Steve Serrano), and Hazel Modeste, were a testament to his enduring love and support.

In 1967, Joseph embarked on a new chapter in his life, immigrating to the United States. Through hard work and determination, he created a better life for his family in Jersey City. He achieved the dream of homeownership on Sterling Avenue, where he raised his four daughters. On that street, he became known as "The Mayor" for his warm smile and engaging in lively conversations on the front porch, where he would happily gossip for hours. Joseph's boundless generosity meant he was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His greatest joy in life came from his grandchildren, who brought endless happiness to his heart. James, Julia, Kaitlin, Brandon, Emma, Joseph, Anthony, Matthew, Grayson, Camille, Jesille, Rosemarie, Nikki, and 4 beautiful great-grandchildren.

Joseph was a beloved man not only within his immediate family but also among extended family members and friends who affectionately called him “Harry”. He shared a unique bond with his siblings and was the last to join them in the afterlife, reuniting with his parents, James and Margaret Nerahoo, as well as his siblings: Moonia, Ruth, Grace, Clement, Paul, John, David, James, and Sheila. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Lillian (late David) Nerahoo.

Joseph Harry Nerahoo will be fondly remembered for his unbreakable spirit, his enduring love for family, and his ability to touch the lives of those he encountered. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, kindness, and love that will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
