Michael J. Kennedy, 65, passed away peacefully at home in New Jersey, surrounded by his loving family.
The son of the late James and Irene Kennedy, Mike was born in Michigan before the family relocated to New Jersey when he was just three years old. It was in New Jersey that Mike would go on to build a full and impactful life, grounded in love, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife and the love of his life, Marlene, and his two sons, Michael and Matthew, who were his greatest pride and joy. He was a deeply dedicated and hands-on father, raising his sons with strength, compassion, and purpose. His commitment to their upbringing defined much of his early life and remained central to who he was.
Mike will forever be missed by his cherished siblings and their spouses: Kathleen McDonough; Eileen Ashtiani (Jay); Kristeen Kaczka (Robert); James Kennedy (Judy); David Kennedy (Nancy). He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Bridget, Ryan, and Patrick McDonough; Justin Ashtiani; Evan (Eryn) and Jon (Beth) Kaczka; Cameron and Hailey Kennedy; and his adored great-nieces and nephews: Sloane, Ayden, and Grace Kaczka. Mike also leaves behind many cousins, lifelong friends, and his faithful best buddy, Beasley.
Mike began his career at Budd Vacuum, where he joined as part of a work-study program. He quickly distinguished himself through his strong work ethic and leadership, eventually becoming a shareholder in the company. His journey from the ground up reflected the determination and humility he carried throughout his life.
Later, Mike joined Tri-State Asphalt, where he partnered with his brother Jim to build a dynamic and respected business. More than a businessman, Mike was a mentor. He believed deeply in the people around him and worked tirelessly to develop and empower his employees not just as workers, but as part of his family. Many credit their personal and professional success to Mike’s guidance and support.
Throughout his life, Mike exemplified quiet strength, loyalty, and generosity. He led by example, listened more than he spoke, and was always there with steady hands and an open heart.
