Mildred (Bertola) LaSala

Mildred LaSala, 96, of Hawthorne passed away on Nov 1, 2023 surrounded by all her loved ones.  Born July 15, 1927, to Anthony and Catherine (nee Briganti) Bertola, she was predeceased by her brother Michael Bertola in 2012 and her beloved husband Charles in 2015. Mildred was a longtime resident of Garfield moving to Hawthorne in 1978, active as a volunteer with St. Anthony’s Parish and Valley Hospital.

Along with her husband Charles she was a savvy business women operating a grocery store and later the trucking firm, Stanch Freight Service. Together they forged a life surrounded by family, friends and a beautiful marriage of 64 years. She had a sense of fashion and impeccable style and showcased that with husband Charles ballroom dancing with friends in NJ and Florida, as well as traveling extensively throughout the country in their RV.

Mildred is survived by son, Steven LaSala and wife Constance, son Anthony LaSala and wife Ilene, daughter JoAnn Alkes and husband Burt and son Charles LaSala Jr. and wife Nuccia. Loving grandmother of Christopher LaSala and wife Sharda and Matthew LaSala and wife Kristen, Zachary and Camryn Alkes and Gabrielle LaSala. Great grandmother of Alana, Liana, Jaden, Simeon, Melissa, Sophia , Jace and Kaia LaSala and canine grandchild Sammy, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends and family on Monday Nov. 6 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff. Prayer services Tuesday 9:15 AM at the funeral home, followed by a 10 AM mass at St Anthony’s R.C. Church, Hawthorne. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Saddle Brook.
