In Loving Memory of Norman Chin
Norman Chin, a distinguished mechanical engineer and World War II Veteran, passed away
peacefully on January 7, 2025, at the age of 104. Born in Taishan, China, he emigrated to the
United States at the age of 15. Not knowing a word of English when he came to this country, he
worked his way from elementary school through college graduation from The Stevens Institute
of Technology.
During his service in the U.S. Army/Air Forces, Norman distinguished himself as an airplane
mechanic in Guam, reaching the rank of Sergeant. His remarkable contributions as a WWII
Veteran earned him the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award bestowed by
the United States Congress.
Norman’s professional career spanned over four decades with the Port Authority of New York
and New Jersey. His expertise led him to design the highly sophisticated HVAC system for the
World Trade Center Twin Towers, which tragically collapsed on September 11, 2001.
Additionally, he played a pivotal role in designing the underground fuel systems for Newark and
Kennedy Airports.
Norman is survived by his son Daniel and wife Gean, his son Douglas, his son Timothy and wife
Alice, and his daughter Margaret and husband Richard Michaud. He is also blessed with eight
grandchildren, Joseph, Jonathan and his wife Christina, Matthew, Jeremy, Nicholas, TJ, Ryan,
and Kacey, and three great-grandchildren, Blaise, Nora, and Charlie.
A devoted New York Yankees fan and enthusiast of Broadway musicals, he cherished the
opportunity to gather his family and friends for festive celebrations, particularly during holidays
and birthdays. Those who knew him enjoyed his culinary mastery, as he always took pride in
sharing his delicious dishes.
