Nurmi Ruth Hernandez Santana Moran passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, December 28, 2020 at the age of 91. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Nurmi obtained degrees in Math and Science as well as a Doctorate in Pedagogy in 1951, during her studies she won class president against Fidel Castro.
In 1962, Nurmi immigrated to the U.S. where she settled in Paterson before moving to Wyckoff. Nurmi was a Spanish teacher at Ramapo High School and a founder of the Holiday Festival. She loved helping, teaching, and giving advice to guide people. She encouraged everyone to do better and had a heart of gold. Nurmi loved traveling the world with her late husband Felipe. She most enjoyed her summers swimming in the ocean in Florida. She was a food enthusiast and an avid reader, novellas being her favorite. Nurmi was fashionable and never left the house without lipstick. She loved a good party and socializing, later in life she was a member of the Senior Social Club in Midland Park. Nurmi comically would use multiple phones simultaneously to be in constant contact with her family and friends. We will always remember her as the family historian and our human GPS.
