Phyllis was born in Passaic, NJ and lived in Midland Park until her marriage to her husband, Herman. They established their home in Wyckoff in 1950, residing there until moving to Wanaque in 2009.
Phyllis was a lifelong member of Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, and was an active participant in choir, small group Bible studies, and the church newsletter. She was also involved with the Committee for Women in the Christian Reformed Church and was passionate about women’s interests in church life.
After graduating from Sherwood Secretarial School in Paterson, she began her career for the John Sullivan Law Firm in Ridgewood. She then worked as a medical secretary in the C.F. Post Medical Building in Ridgewood. Phyllis ended her career employed by Ramapo College as a secretary to former presidents George Potter and Robert Scott. While employed at Ramapo, she continued her education and graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Psychology. Upon retirement, she volunteered at the Christian Health Care Center and enjoyed reading, word puzzles, and travels with her husband.
Phyllis was a devoted and loving wife to her husband, who predeceased her in 2020. They enjoyed 69 years together raising their 3 sons. Phyllis was a faithful mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. Surviving Phyllis are her sons Mark, of Wayne, Richard (Nancy) of West Milford, Steve (Lois) of Wantage, her only granddaughter Caneel, of Wantage, and sister Clara Hoogenhuis, of Mahwah.
The Schipper family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM with a funeral service at 6:00 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 16th 11:00 AM at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Christian Health in Wyckoff, NJ.
