Richard Chadwick Greene
Richard “Dick” Chadwick Greene, 85, of Mahwah, NJ, passed away on the morning of January 27th, 2025.
Dick was born on November 16th, 1939 in Orange, New Jersey to Mynard Greene and Madeline (nee Chadwick) Greene. He attended Ramsey High School (Class of ’57), University of Virginia (Class of ’61) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (1963-65), where he achieved his MBA. He was in the UVA ROTC program and was 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1962-63. He was accomplished in Real Estate sales and development, appraisals and home inspections, and he owned his own business in Upper Saddle River for more than 50 years.
Dick was a 60+ year resident of Mahwah, New Jersey. He and his wife Carol were married in 1969 in Mahwah at the Ramapo Reformed Church and raised their daughter Lindsey there. They have lived at Sun Valley Farm, which has been in Carol’s family since the 1940s, for the past two decades. Sun Valley Farm is one of the first farms in Bergen County to be put into the New Jersey Farmland Preservation Program. Dick and Carol were committed to preserving the farm, and loved to host friends and events for local organizations there. Dick loved farm life, including horses, dogs, driving his tractor, working on equipment, haying the fields and riding around on his 4-wheeler (aka “The Mule”), often with his grandchildren.
He had great enthusiasm for his varied hobbies. A “Jack of All Trades,” Dick embodied the DIY spirit with home and farm projects. He and his wife Carol were very involved in local historical organizations such as the Mahwah Museum, of which they were two of the founders, the Hermitage of Ho-Ho-Kus and W3R-NJ. He and his wife were both amateur pilots, and they owned and flew a Cessna 172 Skyhawk. He also served in the past on the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum Board of Directors in Teterboro.
Dick’s lifelong passion was the preservation and restoration of antique cars. An avid car enthusiast and collector, he traveled the country for Classic Car Club of America and Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club meets, caravans and events. He was a Past National President for both clubs, past ACD Club Chief Judge and current L-29 Cord Historian and Technician, and the 1981 ACD Club Man of the Year recipient. He developed a love of L-29 Cords from his father, and bought his first Cord, an L-29 Cabriolet (still in his garage) as a teenager. He took on the project of self-restoring a 1931 L-29 Cord Dual-Cowl Phaeton in the 1980s-90s. He loved to drive around the completed car whenever he could. And every Labor Day weekend, beginning in 1957 (at age 17), he would travel to Auburn, Indiana, to attend a total of 65 ACD Club Reunions.
Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol (nee Wehran) Greene, his daughter Lindsey Greene Barrett and his grandchildren Clara Barrett and Walter Barrett.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 31st from 4-8 pm at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, New Jersey. Memorial Service will be Saturday, February 1st at 10:00am at Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Road, Mahwah, New Jersey with a graveside service to follow at the Ramapo Reformed Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in his memory to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum (for the ACD Club Photo Car Display), the National Auto & Truck Museum, both located in Auburn, Indiana, and the Ramapo Reformed Church, Mahwah, NJ.
