Richard Moynihan Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Joseph Moynihan of Wyckoff, NJ, formerly of Franklin Lakes and Oakland, who died peacefully, surrounded by family on June 27, 2025 at the age of 90. His kindness, generosity, and steadfast presence will be deeply missed.

Born and raised in Glens Falls, New York, Dick was the second oldest of five children, where hard work, strong moral values and faith were the cornerstones of his family. He was educated by the nuns of St. Alphonsus and St. Mary’s Academy, where he graduated high school.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and was stationed in Pensacola, FL from 1952-1955. His service to country marked the beginning of a lifetime of commitment to family, community, and helping others in need.

Thanks to the G.I. Bill, Dick attended Rider University, earning a degree in finance in 1960. His ambition and work ethic led him to New York City, where he joined Chase Manhattan Bank.  Never one to shy away from hard work, Dick earned his MBA from the Stern School of Business at NYU while working full-time. He joined The Dreyfus Corporation in 1976 to manage the inaugural Dreyfus Tax Exempt Bond Fund.  At the time of his retirement in 2001, he was President of Dreyfus Tax Exempt Bond Funds and Director of Municipal Securities.

Dick’s life was defined not only by professional achievement, but by quiet generosity and compassion. He dedicated his time, leadership, and wealth of experience to causes and organizations that mattered deeply to him. In the 1970’s while living in Oakland, he was elected Councilman and appointed Police Commissioner. He was a longtime Trustee of Valley Hospital and the Valley Health System, Paramus, NJ, serving on numerous boards over the course of 40+ years. Rider University was dear to his heart, where he served on several boards, earned the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1994 and has an endowed scholarship in his name. Over several decades, Dick was a supporter, both professionally and personally, of the Christian Healthcare Center in Wyckoff, NJ. Raised Catholic, Dick embraced the Episcopal Church, becoming an active member of Christ Church, Ridgewood, where he served on the finance committee, the vestry and as warden. He led by example, spoke with wisdom and listened with care. His involvement and giving was rooted in his belief in dignity, opportunity and appreciation for all.

An avid private pilot, Dick found joy in the skies aboard his Cessna 172. Flying was not just a hobby, but a reflection of the freedom, adventure, and discipline he carried throughout his life. Above all else, Dick cherished time spent with family. His greatest joys were found in the everyday moments where he was present for those he loved most, especially his wife, children and grandchildren. Some of Dick’s happiest moments were watching a Yankees baseball game with his little dogs on his lap, gathered around a holiday dinner table, or at the family’s Virginia farmhouse in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where countless memories were made.

He was the devoted husband of Lindsey Winstead Moynihan, the proud father of Daniel J. Moynihan and stepfather of Charles L. Bertini III and Elizabeth Bertini Blair. A warm and welcoming father-in-law to Beth’s husband J. Kent Blair III and Daniel’s partner Danielle Ricci, he was delighted to be the fun-loving grandfather of James, Cameron and Hayden Blair and Kieran Ricci Moynihan. He is also survived by his sisters Betty Jo White, Helen Marie Zurlo, brother David Moynihan and his much loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Elizabeth and John Moynihan and older brother Jack Moynihan.

Dick lived with quiet humility, steady resolve, and an unwavering moral compass. His legacy of love, service, and integrity will continue to guide all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, July 1 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place, Ridgewood, NJ.  A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2 at 11:00 a.m. also at Christ Church.
