Robert Mulligan Obituary

Robert P. “Mr. Bob” Mulligan, age 97 of Wyckoff, formerly of Saddle River, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 30, 2021, at his home.  Robert was born in Cleveland, OH, to the late Patrick and Elsie Mulligan. Bob spent most of his adult life residing in Bergen County.  He is a former parishioner of St. Gabriel’s RC Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Men’s Cornerstone Team and most recently, a parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament RC Church, Franklin Lakes.  

A World War II US Navy Veteran, Bob was stationed aboard the light cruiser Oklahoma City in the Pacific theater and was a member of the first communications team to occupy Japan in 1945.  Bob was one of five Mulligan brothers who served in the US Navy in the Pacific during World War II.  He attended Cathedral Latin High School in Cleveland and following the war, graduated from the University of Michigan where he received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.  He spent his 47 year professional career with Owens Corning Fiberglas Corporation and held positions in sales and marketing before retiring in 1996 as a Vice President. Bob was a member of Hackensack Golf Club for more than fifty years serving on several committees including Chairman of the Building Committee, Chairman of the Handicap Committee, eight years on the Board of Trustees and two years as Vice President.  Following his retirement, he became active in volunteer activities, primarily, Bergen County District Coordinator of the AARP Tax-Aide program, and Activities Unlimited.  As a resident of Saddle River, he was a member of the Saddle River Zoning Board of Adjustment for four years.  Bob is a former member of the Cedar Hill Condominium Board of Directors.

Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Mulligan in 1996.  He is survived by his wife, Elaine Cornell Mulligan of Wyckoff and he is the loving father of three children; Mary Carol Steele of Concord, MA, Alice (Kenneth) Bernhard of Westport, CT and Robert (Suzanne) Mulligan, Jr. of Indianapolis, IN and his five grandchildren; Patrick and Kate Steele, Robert III, Kasey and Jack Mulligan.  Bob is also survived by Elaine’s children; Melissa (Cris) Hartigan of Paramus, NJ and Christopher Cornell of Thousand Oaks, CA and their families; Jack and Emma Hartigan and Kyle and Scott Cornell. Bob married Elaine in 2006.  They loved to entertain, travel, golf and spend winters in Naples. 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ 07481.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021, 11:00 am at St. Elizabeth RC Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff, NJ.  The interment will follow at Valleau Cemetery, Ridgewood, NJ.
