Robert Van Ostenbridge (Bob) age 84 of Mahwah, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Sunday, August 9th after a courageous battle with Lymphoma and Heart Disease. Bob was born in Paterson and was a 70 year resident of Glen Rock until moving to Mahwah 14 years ago. Bob loved Glen Rock, graduating from Richard E. Byrd School, GR Junior High and Ridgewood High School, Class of 1953. It was very special to Bob that his 3 sons also attended Byrd School, and they even shared some of the same teachers! He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Lehigh University in 1957 and began his career at Prudential Insurance Company in the District Agencies Department before serving in the Army from 1958 to 1960. After being honorably discharged he returned to Prudential where he was employed for 36 years.
Bob was an Eagle Scout, and attended Jamborees in New Mexico and California as a teenager. He often told the story of the best Christmas present he ever got – a sleeping bag for camping! After leaving the scouts, he continued to live life by the codes of “Duty to God and Country and Duty to Other People”. “Duty to Self” always came last. In adulthood, he was a Cub Scout Committee Chairmen for his sons’ packs. Bob was a devoted member of the Community Church of Glen Rock for over 55 years, serving as an Elder on Consistory and as Treasurer. He was also on the Counting, Usher, and Property teams, was the Memorial Garden caretaker, and served on countless other committees through the years. He served in these capacities faithfully and willingly.
Bob served on the Glen Rock Board of Health from 1978 to 1993. He also served as Treasurer for Glen Courts Senior Housing for six years and enjoyed being a member of the Activities Club in Glen Rock. His greatest pleasure was giving back to Valley Hospital as a volunteer for over 22 years after pulling through serious heart surgery in 1992.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Doris, of 55 years and his 3 sons; Robert A. and his wife Andrea, Mark and his wife Sharon, and Eric and his wife Francie. He adored his 6 grandchildren; John, Paige, Ryan, Drew, Molly and Alex and was loved beyond measure in return. Bob was predeceased by his mother Josephine, his father Martin, and his brother Howard. Visiting will take place at the Community Church of Glen Rock, 354 Rock Road, Glen Rock on Thursday, August 20th from 2 to 5 pm with a Memorial Service at 4 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, the family asks that donations be made to the Community Church of Glen Rock or to the Culver Lake Watershed, www.culverlakefoundation.org.
