Steve Bergan Obituary

Stephen Bergan died peacefully in his sleep on Monday May 22nd after a courageous and lengthy battle with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) & ALS.   Steve will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 42 years, Maureen, his three children Kaitlin, Chris and Merry, daughter-in-law Caitlin, brother Ned, niece Caroline, and the extended Curley clan.  He was predeceased by his parents Ned and Alice Bergan.

Born and raised in New York City, Steve was a New Yorker through and through, frugal but generous, direct but kind and serious but with a quick wit.  His multi-decade career in finance took him everywhere from Tokyo to Frankfurt to Abu Dhabi but he was home for dinner with his family more nights than not. A couple of years after graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Fordham University, Steve met the love of his life, Maureen, in Georgetown when she asked him for directions. Early in their marriage, while living in the West Village, Steve’s love of sailing led them to discover Block Island, Rhode Island. B.I. would become hugely important to the whole Bergan family for many reasons. None more important than the incredible community of friends who have been there for some of the family’s best times but also some of the hardest, offering incredible support as Steve’s illness progressed.

Despite being a native New Yorker, Steve and Maureen chose to raise their family in beautiful Allendale, New Jersey.  For 32 years, Allendale was an idyllic home furnished with wonderful friends, holidays, and traditions.

A brief interlude to the Allendale era was also a career & family highlight, when in 2000 Steve had the opportunity to relocate the whole family to London, living in St. John’s Wood.

Throughout his life, his many interests and talents included tennis, skiing, sailing, listening to Fleetwood Mac and the BeeGees and devouring the stacks of nonfiction and novels that he kept on his nightstand. Steve was a lifelong learner and early in retirement was again top of his class while earning a Master's in Business Education from New York University.

He had many accomplishments, from academic excellence to serving on the Board of the New York Stock Exchange, but above all he was an exceptional husband, father and human being.

He will be missed for his brilliant mind and sense of humor, but most of all his kindness, generosity and devotion to his family.
