Theodore Edward (Ted) King, Sr. passed away peacefully on September 12, 2023 at the age of 89, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born in the Bronx, Ted was the eldest of the four children of Theodore & Dorothy King.
Ted spent much of his early life in the Bronx, a neighborhood tie which he forever held dear. Here, he attended Mount Saint Michael’s Academy before becoming a Fordham Ram, two institutions he was proud to be a member of and support throughout his life.
Ted’s ties to New York City would carry into his 35 year career in the world of NYC heavy construction. As the Director of Labor Relations for the General Contractors Association, Ted was an instrumental part of historic deals that shaped how New York City is built still today.
Ted met Agnes (Peggy) Sweeney during a summer in the Hamptons, and soon after made her his better half in a loving marriage which would span almost 61 years. They moved to Glen Rock soon after, where they spent over 50 years building a family of six children and a community of lifelong friends. Together, they enjoyed their annual family trips to Beach Haven, being active parishioners of St. Catharine’s Church and watching all six children leave their childhood home on Van Allen Road to start their own lives and families in the greater New York/New Jersey area (though all within driving distance). In retirement, Ted filled his free time with a good book, a new movie, a home project or simply an afternoon in the warm sun on his back deck. He also enjoyed volunteering at both Valley Hospital and St. Catharine Church But his greatest joy in life always was his large family, who will dearly miss his kind and generous soul.
Ted is survived by his wife, six children, four in-laws and fifteen grandchildren. Children Theodore Jr., James, Maura, Kevin, Meghan and Jennifer, daughter-in-laws Maryann (wife of Theodore Jr.), Kelly (wife of James) and Colleen (wife of Kevin), ‘favorite’ son-in-law Ralph (husband of Meghan), grandchildren Theodore, Matthew, Anne, James, Kaitlin, Allison, Brendan, Liam and Riley King, Thomas, Colin, William, and Cooper Consoli, and Lilly and Charles DiSalvo. Ted is also survived by his sister-in-laws Catherine Hammill and Maureen Sweeney, and his adoring nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandson Michael King, his parents Dorothy and Theodore King, as well as his siblings and in-laws John and Darlene King, Tom and Ann King, Marion and Dennis Dale, John Sweeney, James Sweeney and Greg Hammill.
Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Ted’s life at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ on Sunday, September 17 from 3:00 until 7:00pm. Funeral mass will be at 10:00am at St. Catharine Church, 905 S Maple Avenue, Glen Rock, NJ on Monday, September 18, 2023. Interment will follow at St. Luke's Cemetery in Ho Ho Kus.
