Born in the Bronx, N.Y. to father Anthony LaValle and mother Jeanne LaValle (née Pagana), and raised with older brother John and younger brother Joseph. Valerie grew up surrounded by a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Valerie was an exceptional student and graduated from Evander Childs High School in 1959 at the age of 16. She went on to study and graduate from Hunter College in New York City with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in June of 1963.
She was first married to Nicholas J. LaBate, and they had two children together, daughter Andrea and son Nicholas who they raised in New City, N.Y.
Valerie returned to school, attending Mercy College. She graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors in 1986. In addition, she was a Gold Medal recipient for excellence in the major field of accounting, as well as being awarded a certificate from the Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society in Business Administration.
She met and married Steven Weiss in 1995. They split their time between Pennsylvania and Florida until his passing. Valerie returned home to N.Y. and continued to focus on her family with all her heart as a grandmother, taking on the title of “Nana”. She was lovingly devoted to grandsons Matthew and Jake, and granddaughter Veronica. Each of them had beautiful and unique relationships with their Nana as she cherished them dearly.
Valerie was the emotional heart of her family, as her home was the focus of all family gatherings and holiday celebrations. She was active in her community of Ramsey, N.J., as well as volunteering at The Valley Hospital, and participating in book club, mahjong, and canasta. Valerie will be loved and missed by all!
Valerie is pre-deceased by her husband Steven Weiss and brother Joseph LaValle. She is survived by daughter Andrea Koesterich and her husband Mark, and her sons Matthew and Jake Glanz; son Nicholas, his daughter Veronica, and his partner Michelle Morris; brother John LaValle and his wife Annette and their children; a loving extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends that she loved with her whole heart.
Visitation will be at Vander Plaat Funeral Home at 257 Godwin Avenue in Wyckoff, N.J. on Monday, September 8th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held at Church of the Presentation at 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River, N.J. on Tuesday, September 9th at 10:00 a.m.
A private family burial will be held at a later date.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
