Warren Francis Van Thunen, a long-time resident of Saddle River passed away on June 20, 2025. He was 98.
The husband of the late Ann Van Thunen, son of Ottilie and Martin Van Thunen, brother of Evelyn Zellein, Warren was born in New York City and was a long-time resident of Saddle River, NJ. He served as a Navy Air Crewman in WW II and entered the insurance industry in 1947.
In 1950, Warren, along with partner Harold S. Daynard Esq., formed Daynard & Van Thunen Co. Inc., an independent property insurance adjusting company which operated in downtown Manhattan for over 60 years. The company was in the World Trade Center from 1976 until September 11, 2001, and maintained offices in Jersey City NJ, Ft. Meyers and Miami, Florida. The company was sold to York Risk Services Group in 2010. In 2011 after a long and distinguished career, Warren retired at the age of 84. Warren’s keen business acumen was widely respected in the industry. He represented many of the largest insurance companies in the world, adjusting complex and catastrophic property insurance claims while mentoring many adjusters during his career.
During the winters, Warren and Ann lived on Singer Island then Jupiter Island, Florida. As avid golfers, they were members of The Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, NY and Old Marsh Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he spent many joyous hours on the golf course with his wife, family, and friends.
Always ready with a joke, Warren’s sense of humor was legendary, and “Poppy” was adored by his grandchildren for his kindness, ready smile, and hilarious stories. He is missed by his son Bill, (Mary Ann), daughter Laura Greenough (Malcolm), grandchildren Will Van Thunen (Amanda), Victoria Van Thunen, Anne Greenough, and John Greenough (Liz) and his great grandson Wills Van Thunen.
A funeral mass will be held for Warren and Ann at St. Gabriel the Archangel's Roman Catholic Church in Saddle River, followed by a private interment at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
