William (Bill) Patrick Hassan (1941–2026) passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026. Born on March 4, 1941, he was the son of Edward and Anna Hassan and grew up in Belleville, New Jersey, alongside his siblings John, Edward, Mary, and Anne.
Bill’s early life, including time spent at St. Joseph’s School for Boys Orphanage in Englewood, New Jersey, shaped the quiet strength and resilience that would define him. He carried those experiences with humility and grace. Determined and hardworking, he put himself through night school at St. Peter’s College while working, building a life grounded in perseverance and purpose.
He shared a loving and devoted marriage with his wife, Theresa (Terry), his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and a deep, steady love that never wavered.
Bill was the loving father of his predeceased daughter, Tracy (Chris Kleiman), and is survived by his children Kelly (Hans Cunningham), Bill (Pamela Salerno), and Michael (Kirsten Wheeler). His family was everything to him, and he took immense pride in each of them, always showing up, always supporting, and always making sure they knew how much they were loved.
His greatest joy was being “Granddad” and “Pop” to his grandchildren, Grant, Maggie, Will, Molly, Quinn, Casey, and Carter. He shared a special bond with each of them, whether through his stories, his humor, or simply being by their side. Time spent with them was what he treasured most.
Bill began his professional career at International Paper, where he met Terry. He later worked at Johns Manville and then Northwestern Mutual before building a successful real estate partnership with Terry at Coldwell Banker. He was known not only for his strong work ethic, but for the relationships he built along the way. He had a natural warmth about him, and no one stayed a stranger for long.
A man of deep Catholic faith, Bill attended St. Sebastian’s in Woodside, Queens, New York, where he served as the first lector, and later continued as a lector at St. Catharine’s in Glen Rock, New Jersey. His faith remained a steady and guiding presence throughout his life.
He believed deeply in giving back. Bill served on the Board of Directors at Peace Care St. Ann’s in Jersey City and was one of the originators of Youth Guidance in Glen Rock, helping to guide and support young people through challenging times. He never looked for recognition, only for ways to help.
At his core, Bill was a storyteller. As a writer and published author, he had a gift for reflecting on life with honesty, humor, and perspective. He had a way of making even the simplest moments meaningful, and his stories will live on in the memories of those who knew him.
In so many ways, Bill lived a life defined by love, kindness, empathy, and generosity. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. He had a way of making people feel comfortable, welcomed, and cared for, and that is how he will be remembered.
He will be deeply missed and loved forever.
A part of him will always live on in the stories he told and the love he gave so freely. He taught us “Life Takes You Unexpected Places. Love Brings You Home.” He is “Finally Home.”
