Matthew Torpey, lovingly known as Pat, of Oakland, NJ, previously of Wyckoff, NJ and Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, passed away on February 2nd, 2023 at the age of 84.
A loving brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle; Matthew is survived by his sister, Mary, daughter, Christine, son, Thomas, and his daughter-in-law, Dawn; as well as his grandchildren Lindsay, Megan, Sean, and Matthew. He was predeceased by his loving wife. Joan, his parents, Matthew Sr. and Helen, and his sister, Helen.
Matthew was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the US Navy as a Navy Seabee. After his service, Matthew worked for the New York City Transit Authority as a mechanic. Upon leaving Brooklyn, Matthew moved to Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. He worked as a custodian in Waldwick, NJ, where he was loved by all. Matthew was a car, golf, and NY Giants enthusiast who enjoyed avidly reading the newspaper and listening to the radio. An animal lover, Matthew was adored by his dogs, Max, and Chloe. He was a parishioner and usher at St. Luke’s Church in Ho-Ho-Kus, and a parishioner at St. Elizabeth in Wyckoff. He could always be found with lifesavers in his pocket, a cup of coffee in his hand, and trying to make others laugh.
Visitation will take place on Monday, February 6th, 2023 at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, www.vpfh.com, 257 Godwin Ave, Wyckoff, NJ from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be at St. Elizabeth RC Church, 700 Wyckoff Ave, Wyckoff, NJ on Tuesday, February 7th, 2023 at 10 AM with interment to follow at St. Luke’s Cemetery, 340 Franklin Tpke, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ.
Per Matthew’s request, the visitation and funeral service dress code is no tie necessary.
